Alstom successfully delivers the first two
The manufacture and delivery of the first two trains to Egypt of 70 trains through the Alstom plant in Derby, UK has been completed
The arrival of the Innovia 300 Cairo monorail represents an important step in the implementation of the €2.7 billion project.
Alstom has announced the arrival of the first two trains of the Innovia 300 Cairo monorail project to Egypt following the completion of the vehicles manufacturing at the company’s factories in Derby, UK and the implementation of drive systems through Alstom’s site in Trabaja, Spain.
It is worth noting that the delivery of the first 8 cars out of 70 trains (a total of 280 cars) that are fully automated without a driver, represents an important and pivotal step in the implementation of the Cairo Monorail project, which is the first project of its kind in Egypt.
The project includes two monorail lines linking the New Administrative Capital and 6th of October City in Greater Cairo.
It is worth noting that in August 2019, the consortium led by Alstom and comprising Orascom Construction and the Arab Contractors Company, signed a €2.7 billion contract to design, implement, operate and maintain the Cairo monorail, which consists of two lines, with the first line of the project reaching 54 km, and connects the New Administrative Capital with the East Cairo region, while the second line is 42 km long and connects 6th of October City and Giza.

The two lines are expected to open in 2023, and after the completion of the construction of the two lines, the Alstom-led consortium will provide operation and maintenance services for them for a period of 30 years.
Commenting on this important step, Mr. Andrew Dillion, President of Alstom for Africa, Middle East and Central Asia, said, “I am proud of the project team as they were able to successfully deliver the first two trains to the Public Authority for Tunnels. The monorail project will completely change the transportation system for the benefit of all citizens, With less commuting time, traffic jams, pollution and of course lower carbon emissions.” He added, “This project is part of the government’s ongoing plan and efforts to redefine life in Egyptian cities in the future… It is the future that we are committed to achieving on the ground through safe, smart and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.”
It is noteworthy that Egypt seeks to develop mass transit systems to improve transportation services for its citizens throughout the country, in addition to its desire to reduce traffic jams and carbon emissions that have a negative impact on the environment. The Innovia 300 system allows the establishment of monorail lines with high capacity in a short time and at low costs, as each of the two Cairo monorail lines, after its completion, will be able to transport 45,000 passengers per hour in each direction as a maximum capacity. On the other hand, the Innovia 300 monorail system is equipped with Alstom’s Cityflo 650 automatic signaling system to control the movement of trains running, based on advanced communication systems. One of the most important advantages of this pioneering technology is its ability to provide high operational availability rates, superior flexibility for lines operations, reduce the pick-up time between trains operating on the same line, high rates of safety and passenger safety, and finally low maintenance costs. The Alstom Mitrac drive system offers the highest levels of reliability and maintainability, in addition to the best energy consumption rates thanks to the permanent magnet motor.
