MOUNDSVILLE — As a die-hard baseball fan, it’s easy to recognize passion for America’s Pastime.

Former John Marshall baseball coach Bob Montgomery has that passion for the game and it showed on the diamond.

Montgomery was inducted into the OVAC Hall of Fame in 2018 and on Saturday, he was honored as part of the inaugural class of the John Marshall Hall of Fame.

Montgomery coached from 1969-2017, winning a state title in 1985 and is still second all-time in the OVAC in victories with 869 wins — only behind Magnolia’s Dave Cisar. Montgomery also ranks third in all-time wins in the state of West Virginia.

While he was waiting for baseball season to arrive, Montgomery spent his time as a basketball referee and still does to this day — a job he’s enjoyed since 1962.

Joining Monty in the first JM Hall of Fame are:

Stan Blankenship

A 2016 inductee into the OVAC Hall of Fame, Blankenship was also as good as they come in the OVAC and the state of West Virginia. He finished his brilliant coaching career with 542 wins — making him the winningest coach in girls’ basketball in the valley and West Virginia from 1979-2011. In 1982, Blankenship’s Monarchs grabbed glory as the W.Va. Class AAA state champions. His top star is the next John Marshall Hall of Fame inductee.

Amy Gamble

Gamble was an All-American and 2004 OVAC Hall of Fame inductee on Blankenship’s 1982 state title team. She averaged 23 points and 18 rebounds that year as the Monarchs marched on to a 22-1 record.

She garnered 1,498 career points and played for the 1983 Lady Vols squad at Tennessee. She was also a trailblazer. She was the first Olympian from Marshall County — competing in the 1988 games for the US Women’s Handball team. She was also the first JM girl to score more than 1,000 points and is the first JM athlete to have her jersey retired.

Bill Hinegardner

Another OVAC Hall of Famer — Hinegardner was a 2007 inductee and spent 14 years coaching John Marshall wrestling and led the Monarchs to four state titles, four OVAC overall team titles and the Monarchs earned five OVAC 4A championships under his guidance. In 1996, Hinegardner was a member of the coaching staff that won the W.Va. Class AAA football crown. That team was coached by:

Michael Linsky

The late, great coach of the 1996 state champions, Linsky coached the Monarchs from 1983-2006 where he was more than just a coach but a friend and a mentor to all that laced up the cleats on Friday nights.

Rudy Zatezalo

Speaking of state titles, Zatezalo won four of them as the John Marshall golf coach from 1975-2005 and helped the golf program get to where it is today.

Duane Miller

In 1996, Miller was awarded All-American honors as a cross country and track standout. He also captured a state title in cross country that season.

Ryan Muldrew

Add another All-American to the list of John Marshall Hall of Famers. Muldrew secured the national honor in 1995 as a two-time wrestling state champion.

Cliff Ward

Impressive doesn’t begin to identify what the JM team in 1995 looked like. Ward also pocketed All-American honors that year with Muldrew and was also a two-time state champ.

Alfonso Flores

Flores coached both softball and basketball at JM from the 1970s until 2010 and added to the school’s trophy case in 1988 as he led the Monarchs to a state softball title.

Fred Tweedlie

What didn’t Tweedlie do for the Monarchs. Athletic Director, Administrator, head track coach and head football coach were all titles held by Tweedlie during his time at JM.

Lexie and Bob Hanket

Both were JM contributors and members of the Monarch Booster Club since 1982.
