Car hits bicyclists from church group

A group of bicyclists from an Amish church group was struck by a vehicle on Route 22 near Brick Hill Road about 4 a.m. Thursday. The collision killed one bicyclist and injured three others who were in fair condition at Forbes Hospital. One of them has been admitted.Watch the report from Murrysville in the video player above.The Westmoreland County Coroner has identified the victim as Marcus Coblentz of Sugarcreek, Ohio.A relative of Coblentz spoke with Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 by phone. They described him as an energetic person with a very large circle of friends who was a hard worker and who had his own concrete business.”It’s unfortunate. It’s a shame that this happened,” said Murrysville Police Chief Thomas Seefeld.A car driven by a 16-year old girl struck the four cyclists. Seefeld said the driver stayed at the scene and was very cooperative with police.”The investigation in cooperation with the Pennsylvania State Police, will see if there are charges in order and, if so, we’ll take the appropriate measures but at this point, we don’t expect that,” Seefeld said. “The early indications are that they had on some reflective material and also had some blinking lights on their bicycles. From everything that we gathered initially here, the operator of the vehicle did not have time to react.”The eastbound lanes of Route 22 were closed for several hours while police investigated at the crash scene.The organization Bike Pitttsburgh issued a statement saying, “Roads need to be safe for all users. Our hearts go out to the bicyclists and their families.”
